Trey Anastasio Interview

Trey Anastasio Opens Up About His New Mystery Band, Ghosts of the Forest.

Interviewer:It’s been a decade since you put a new band together. How did you know that those songs required a new team?
Trey :It used to be without a doubt not gonna be a brand new band or even a show. It was just personal songs that I was writing. And the big impetus used to be Fish [drummer Jon Fishman] and Tony [Markellis] were two of the primary other folks I met when I moved to Burlington when I used to be 18, and I began a band with each of them. Tony was once the root of TAB and Fish was once the foundation of Phish, thus the name. But they'd never played in combination. And they'd been pals and circling — I believe they'd performed perhaps two songs together in 30 years. I assumed it will be amusing to name them and monitor the thing as a trio.

Not to convolute the tale — however [before that] I had a TAB tour booked, however Ray had a brain tumor. It used to be very serious, and we had been very scared. I will thankfully say that he’s One hundred % cured. We canceled the excursion. By the time the studio dates got here, there was a lot of emotion within the air. I had a number of songs. But it’s so raw and natural. We recorded in two days. I take note we had been performed, and [our supervisor] Patrick Jordan I keep in mind being shocked. I called up Patrick and mentioned, “We’re achieved.”

My good friend Chris, who a lot of those songs roughly allude to, passed away on the end of February. He was once a nature lover. He beloved the mountains. He always would take me mountain climbing. One of the issues that was once form of further sad concerning the loss was once that he was my good friend out of doors of all this — a long-before, boyhood pal. When we have been a young band and we might force out to Colorado from somewhere in a single day, he would always grab me and make me hike up the Flatirons, or move skiing, or cross fly-fishing, which I sucked at. He would always take me out of the excursion. It simply dawned on me lately that he was kind of my tether to adolescence and to a life before Phish happened — any person that kind of understood who it's worthwhile to communicate to that didn’t paintings with me.

Interviewer:When did you understand you had been writing about Chris?
Trey :I try to keep in the provide as much as imaginable, and I’m a big Eckhart Tolle fan. I learn that stuff at all times, and in addition I play in a visceral, improvisational band. We don’t pass onstage with a collection listing. My lifestyles may be very a lot, you know, the next word.

So some of this stuff began after which when all of these events came about. Some of the tune for “Drift While You Were Sleeping” used to be written, but I didn’t moderately know what it was once about. And then I went thru this thing with Chris at the remaining stage of his lifestyles. I sat for days with him with my acoustic guitar. He sat on the couch and he more or less drifted out and in of consciousness. It used to be tough and frightening, and likewise roughly stunning. It form of became [about], “Well, we’re all going there, we’re all here in combination in loss of life and in dreaming, and we’re free of time.” I used to be excited about my sister who additionally died of most cancers, and my grandmother. We raise those folks round with us.

Interviewer:One of essentially the most emotional songs is “In Long Lines,” where you sing about loved ones who've left us “moving around us … in lengthy lines.” Where did that idea come from?
Trey :Well, you know, maybe this is some kind of mid-life crisis on a record, I don’t know. My sister died. I had the same enjoy that such a lot of of my pals have had, which is after she died — we have been there when she drifted off — I had this sort of second. It actually used to be more or less tough, the place I kind of had my eyes closed and had a moment. She have been so ill for goodbye and then abruptly I saw her in my thoughts’s eye, colourful and wonderful once more, and I had forgotten that she had even appeared like that. It was once a glimpse and it went away and I never saw it again. But it comforted me. [It was once] this idea that these kind of persons are carried in our hearts and souls. This is so now not profound, everyone thinks this, however I couldn’t shake it. Normally I’m so constructive — the whole lot’s high quality. But this one just hit me. I was unhappy for some time.

“In Long Lines,” some of the humorous things about Chris is he was once roughly a mountain man, and he smoked. He smoked proper up till he died. I more or less cherished it, in a unusual means. But one of the remaining things he did was move out on the porch and smoke a cigarette. And that was once the kind of guy he used to be. That’s in the music, should you listen, you understand: “I lit your cigarette.” I don’t suggest it for everybody who has most cancers.
